Can-Peat Symposium 2025: Nature-Based Climate Solutions

I just returned from the Can-Peat and Peatland Ecology Research Group (PERG) Symposium in the breathtaking Kananaskis Country, Alberta!

As a subarctic peatland researcher, I found it inspiring to connect with fellow experts and stakeholders to discuss the crucial role peatlands play in combating climate change. These natural ecosystems act as significant carbon sinks, offering effective nature-based solutions.

The symposium’s setting amidst the stunning landscapes of Kananaskis provided the perfect backdrop for our discussions. I feel rejuvenated and more committed than ever to advancing peatland research for a sustainable future!

DID YOU KNOW?

Peatlands are the largest natural terrestrial carbon stores, holding more carbon than all other vegetation combined! They regulate water, support biodiversity, and face threats like permafrost thaw and wildfires. Collaboration and Indigenous knowledge are essential for peatland conservation.
